After the kittens all pulled through their bout with Panleukopenia, they all seemed to go back to life as kittens as if they were never sick at all. They were still learning a thing or two about potty training and eating solid food, but I readily forgave the misplaced poops, and the scattered kibble. After all, there was no way I could be mad with any of those adorable faces!
Do we look like kittens that misbehave? |
Now that they were holding down food and water they were gaining a little more weight. They all still remained small for their age, but the Vet told me that the Panleukopenia virus could stunt their growth.
When they had turned 6 weeks old I started to notice that when Westleigh was walking or sniffing something his movements were exaggerated and over the top. While walking his rear end seemed weak or uncoordinated. I had no idea what was going on, but I knew he didn't seem right.
I asked my Veterinarian if she knew what was happening and showed her the video clip I had of Westleigh walking. She said she was suspicious of Cerebellar Hypoplasia, which she explained is similar to Cerebral palsy in humans. He would be fully aware mentally, just not completely capable of controlling his fine motor movements. As he grew it became more apparent that this condition was what was wrong with him. The Vet assured me that as long as the symptoms do not interfere with his every day life Westleigh could live to be a happy, healthy, wobbly adult.
Even though occasionally he uses the couch or the wall as a crutch when he walks, Westleigh does very well for a CH kitten. He can use the potty box like a pro (his litter flinging skills are matched by none), and he can climb onto the couch and play with his siblings. He has no idea that he is different, and I'm not about to tell him.
